Ovan or Evan lake is an alpine lake (Alpine lakes are classified as lakes or reservoirs at high altitudes, usually starting around 5,000 feet (1524 meters) in elevation above sea level) 75 km far from the city of Qazvin a historical city, the second capital of Safavids Dynasty. The north of the lake is also surrounded by three small villages, namely from east to west: Varbon, Ovan and Zar-abaad. If you go there do not miss to visit Alamut Castle and Qazvin.
2. Sabalan Lake
Sabalan lake With 4811 meters high is the third highest peak in Iran after Damavand Mountain and Alam KuhSabalan Mountain has a Crater Lake formed at its summit. The Crater Lake is covered with ice all year except for about four weeks in late July to early August. The lake is 15 to 40 meters deep. Sabalan Crater Lake has created a spectacular view.
3. Urmia Lake
In the northwest of Iran between the provinces of West and East Azarbaijan, the largest lake in the middle east is located. Urmia lake is an endorheic salt lake in Iran. It covers an area that varies from 2,000 to 2,300 square miles (5,200 to 6,000 square km). Due to Lake Urmia’s waters do not have an outlet, they are highly saline. The lake is 25 percent as salty as the Dead Sea, with a salt content ranging from 8-11 percent in the spring to 26/28 percent in the late fall. The main salts are chlorine, sodium, and sulfates.
4. Salt lake
If you are lucky enough to be in Iran, in fall and winter. Maranjab desert is a perfect place to be. Desert, salt lake, Abbasi caravanserai are the attraction of the Aran o Bidgol region near Kashan in Esfahan province.
Sunrise and sunset watching, camping, camel riding are the activities you can do in the desert of Maranjab.
The Maranjab salt lake is used for salt extraction too. The lands around the salt lake are swampy, so it’s better to visit the salt lake with a local guide who knows the area.
5. Maharloo (Pink lake)
On your travel to Shiraz right 27 Km southeast of Shiraz there is a seasonal lake also is known as the pink lake. It is considered suitable and valuable habitat for migratory birds and wild animals.
It is called the pink because the water surface has turned red due to the high salinity, halophyte bacteria and salinity resistant algal bloom called red tide.
6. Gahar Lake
Gahar is beside the Oshtorankouh mountains in Zagros Range in the province of Lorestan. It is 2360m above the sea level, 1700m long and 500m wide. The depth of the lake is 28m maximum.
Gahar Lake is one of the best samples of lakes that have been appeared due to the landslide. the Gahar is well known for its sweet water and cold water, the wetter of this lake is turquoise and light blue.in the river there are fish: for example, Rainbow trout, Salmo trutta fario, and etc.
Local people and tourists go there to have a picnic, barbecue and to camp near the Gahar lake.
7. Farakhin Lake(the pearl in the forest)
Farakhin lake is among one of the most unique lakes in Iran which is in the forest in the north of Iran, to go there you need to get a car from a local guide to lead you to a protected area near Noshahr in Mazandaran province.
Not far from Farakhin lake there is an eye-catching waterfall worth to visit.
8. Miankaleh lake and wetland
To introduce Miankale I should say, Miankale is the paradise of bird watching. Among the different types of birds found in this area is a range of migratory aquatic birds like Dalmatian pelican, Phoenicopterus, swans, ducks, geese. There are also birds of prey in this area, such as Western marsh harrier and White-tailed eagle. The terrestrial birds of this wetland can be called pheasants, francolins, and Bee-eater. Alongside these birds, Miankaleh wetland is a place for breeding fish. Fish like carp, mullet, Caspian kutum, zander, sturgeon, etc.
To get to Miankale you should go to Sari in Mazandaran province in the north of Iran, then go to Behshahr and get to Miankale protected area.
9. Valasht lake
Valasht is a 4 season beautiful lake in northern Iran in Chalus. Valasht Lake is located in Mazandaran Province between Kelardasht and Chalus and 15 kilometers from Marzanabad. The lake has literally sprung up from beneath the ground for the water feeding it comes from underground springs, flowing into a big bowl formed as the result of erosion which now functions as the basin of this peaceful lake.
10. Neor Lake
Neor Lake (Neur) is located 48 km. southeast of the city of Ardabil. The lake has been supported by Environmental Protection Administration since 1348 SH and it is now one of the main research centers on aquatics in this organization.
